Rousseau's Music

Rousseau’s Music Store and Music Studios is located on 124 Main Street just outside of the downtown area of Jaffrey.  Opened by owners Mike and Diane Rousseau in 2006, Rousseau’s Music Store has a large inventory of musical instruments, gear, music books and accessories. It houses a music school of five practice rooms where nine teachers currently teach 150 students piano, guitar (acoustic, electric, bass), percussion and drums, flute,  saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, French horn, oboe, and violin.

Rousseau’s carry several national brands – Gretsch drums, Orange amplifiers, Seagull, LaPatrie, and Godin guitars (assembled in Berlin, NH!),  Sabian and Zildjian cymbals, and accessories for most all instruments. “We have over 100 instruments in stock,” said Mike, a drummer himself who plays with The Frost Heaves’ Speed Bumps, the Greater Keene Pops Choir, Lion’s Club Orchestra, and at the Jaffrey Bible Church. “We carry the largest selection of drum heads, sticks, and guitar strings in the Monadnock Region as well as bows, strings, reeds, harmonicas, method books and accessories for most instruments ”  At this time of year, popular purchases include guitars, drum sets, amplifiers, microphones, electric keyboards and gift certificates. Rousseau’s offers a rental program on several instruments allowing customers and students looking to try an instrument the opportunity to try an instrument on a short or long term basis with the option to purchase at any time. Rousseau’s Music has been the main resource for hundreds of students in the area school districts  for renting, purchasing and repairing their musical instruments from a local music store. They also buy and sell items on consignment and repair most instruments.

People stop in not only for purchases, but guidance on specific instruments, getting started, and learning an instrument:

  • Mikes advice for a good first instrument? “Not just because I am primarily a percussionist, but when asked what the ideal instrument would be to start on” Mike states. “I do think drumming is a great entry to music because you begin with rhythm, then you can add pitch for melodies, and then combine the pitches for harmonies and chords, etc.”
  • When to begin lessons? “People often will stop in and ask about lessons. What age should someone start? We have students who start at age 4. I currently have a student who is 93. Learning an instrument is on a lot on people’s bucket lists and we love to part of the realization of those dreams.
  • Giving a gift for a beginning musician? “When people come in looking for an instrument as a gift I talk to people about getting a basic instrument and investing in lessons. You can always upgrade the instrument, sell it, or try another instrument later. With lessons you are investing in yourself with the knowledge that will provide for a lifetime of enjoyment!
  • Where to purchase an instrument? “I often consult with people who don’t purchase from us or are not regulars at ROUSSEAU’S MUSIC. I receive great joy to just assist in the process of helping people be involved in music at any level they may choose to pursue and whatever their need may be. There are different stores in the Monadnock region and we all have our specialty.  I will refer people to other stores if we are not the best fit for that situation and many businesses send customers to us if they don’t have what someone is looking for.”
