A Visit to Retro Music

About a block above Keene Central Square, at 38 Washington Street you can find Retro Music.  Located in the same space since 1988, the store sells only used instruments and equipment.  Owned by Jeff Firestone, a musician himself, Retro Music’s specialty is guitars.  The small space boasts an inventory of 200 pieces at any given time – showcased along all of the walls to make for easy searching.  The instruments vary in grade and age, the inventory changes frequently, and it is not uncommon to find vintage guitars for sale on display.  In addition, there are many other instruments for purchase; on the day of my visit there were drums, banjos, an upright bass, a djembe, mandolins, even an oud (Arabic lute)!

Jeff’s customers are of all ages and levels, from beginner to professional. The store has a brisk mail order business with customers literally from around the world – near the front counter was a guitar boxed up and ready for shipment to Switzerland. If you can’t get to the store, you can search the website for the right instrument.

Jeff’s advice for the shopper looking to give a musical instrument for a gift?  Buy local.  “I get really busy after the holidays with lots of requests for repairs,” said Jeff. “When you come here I can help you find the right instrument that I have checked over myself.” Another option for gift giving is renting a band or orchestra instrument. Retro Music has partnered with a company that offers flexible rental plans with options for exchange, purchase, and maintenance and repair.

Retro Music is open Mondays through Saturdays. Stop in, give Jeff a call at 603- 357 9732, or visit online.
